OUR CITY MEDIA INTERNSHIP
"Our City Media is the largest publisher of magazines in South Florida. Our community oriented magazines reach more than 150,000 homes and businesses every month throughout Broward County and Aventura. We are the only source of Community and School News for many of the markets we serve. We also have an informative, multimedia website and social media presence with more than 10,000 followers."ourcitymedia.com From July 1st through August 9th 2019, I had the privilege of interning at South Florida's largest magazine publisher, Our City Media. Although my main role was to improve their social media platforms, I was also awarded the opportunity to gain experience of the entire collective advertising process. If you click on the "Our City Media Website" button below, you will be redirected to the publication's website. One of my assignments over he Summer consisted of completely remodeling the design and personality of their website. In addition, I was tasked with publishing new posts to the website daily, and solely responsible for ensuring that all of the print edition articles were uploaded. Most of my time during the Internship was invested into improving their brand awareness on Instagram and Facebook. Before I took over their Instagram, it had a following of around 50 people and consisted of only 5 instagram posts. To improve these numbers I created a plan based of their target market's demographic and their behaviors on social media. After analyzing these factors I created a daily Instagram and Facebook posting schedule, edited and designed posts that visually broadcasted their brand identity, and consistently engaged with profiles targeted at their readers and clientele. In less than two months my strategy had dramatically increased their social media presence by 600%. This page showcases all of the Instagram posts I created throughout my internship, along with their corresponding captions. Interning at Our City Media gave me the invaluable experience of working through the entire media strategy process from start to finish, understanding the challenges of working alongside a team comprised of numerous specialties, flourishing my skills in Photoshop and InDesign, and forging a final product that is successful among its consumers.

Warning ⚠️ Crocodiles don’t make good pets unless you are a descendent of Steve Irwin himself ⚠️ Luckily for the Florida citizens there are only about 400-500 crocodiles who reside there. Unluckily for the locals of Hollywood Florida however, a six foot long croc was spotted straight chillin in the sand on a local populated beach. Hours later the big guy was later captured, via a lasso, by a crew member of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission 🐊🤠. And now... a pro tip for how to survive a crocodile attack brought to you by Our City Media: run in a zigzag line because crocodiles have trouble changing direction on land. #you’rewelcome #howtosavealife #petoftheday #run#crocodiles #florida #wildlife#ourcitymedia #Hollywood#funinthesun

Everyone meet Whiskey! This sweet boy was adopted from a Humane Society adoption event. He is a unique pointer and german shepherd mix living in sunny Davie. His idea of a good time is ripping squeaky toys and stuffed animals to smithereens. His hobbies include playing fetch 🥏, digging holes🥇, taking a photoshoot📸, and chasing rodents in the backyard☠️. He’s hypersensitive to loud noises ... making fireworks, thunder, blow dryers, and bubble wrap his enemies. To calm himself, he finds tranquility when nibbling on his dog bed and stuffed animals. Whiskey was last spotted doing what he does best, standing on his 2 back legs, giving me a hug 🥰. #petofthemonth #stayconnected #ourcitymedia #humanesociety #whiskey #cute #pets #love #davie #florida

Now entering its 27th season serving South Florida, Dance Theatre remains a popular studio for dances of all ages to train. Dance Theatre offers a truly comprehensive program where dancers ages 3 through adult, beginner through advanced, can take classes in every possible discipline. These include the basics, like ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, contemporary, acrobatics, and pointe, as well as specialty classes like strength and flexibility, leaps and turns, and the newest arrival, aerial silks and lyra. Owner and Director Michelle Gerlick explains, “Awards are nice, and our trophies are beautiful, but that’s not what we strive for. We shoulder an enormous responsibility with our promise to educate. It is incumbent upon us to do it effectively. We train exceptional dancers, but we also help to raise exceptional young women (and a few men). Our staff is teeming with strong, positive, intelligent role models who help to guide our students as they mature. We work hard, we have passion, and we care deeply about the impact we have on their lives. When a parent tells me that their child has flourished since enrolling, I melt. When past graduates return to say we helped them find success in life, as with dance, nothing can compare. On the first Sunday of June, hundreds of communities across the country, across the globe and around the corner celebrated National Cancer Survivors Day ®. The significant day was a celebration for those who have survived the disease, an inspiration for those recently diagnosed, a support system for families and loved ones, and an outreach to the community all in an effort to honor survivors and to pass the message to the world that there is life after a cancer diagnosis. The Memorial Cancer Institute and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital was sure to celebrate just the same. However, they didn’t have just any celebration. With the help of Macy’s, the renowned Hollywood facility presented a fashion show. The show featured current cancer patients and survivors as runway models as part of Memorial’s comprehensive survivorship program, which supports patients at all stages of the recovery process. Research has shown that patients who have a support system have better outcomes than those primarily battling on their own. The anticipated event was an opportunity for the community to see that it has an active, productive cancer survivor population and bring awareness to the challenges and tribulations these survivors face during and after treatment. Vedner Guerrier, vice president of oncology services at the Memorial Cancer Institute explained “This was a special opportunity to empower our adult and pediatric cancer patients at an event that celebrated treatment milestones, survivorship, and the lives of those that have been touched by our Memorial and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital programs. We treat the whole person, not just the disease, and provide support from diagnosis to remission.” What a great way to honor these very brave survivors and people who are still fighting. They are a true inspiration to people everywhere. #cancer#cancersurvivor # brave #macy’s #memorialcancerinstitute #runway#ourcitymedia #stayconnected

New month new pets 🐶!!! Meet Plantation’s Pet Of The Month, ~Sunny~🌞. Sunny, a beautiful Havanese boy, was adopted by his loving family 9 years ago. His favorite thing to do is to walk and spin on two (2) legs to get his treats (walks like all the way across the room). Sunny gets very exited when we all come home and he starts running all over the house. Sunny hates being left alone and shakes like crazy when he hears thunder or the sound of the smoke or dryer timer alarm. And he is obviously a very talented cyclist 🙃!
🥁DRUM ROLL PLEASE🥁 It’s time to announce Hollywood’s August Pet of the Month! Meet Charly, a beautiful 4 year old male cat, who was gifted to his owner by her daughter Melissa. Charley’s owner explained, “Charly is my best friend you can, he sleeps right next to my feet or above my head every night. Every morning I give him these treats, all I have to say is “ Charly do you want to brush your teeth” and here he comes running. His favorite toy is this long stick that has feathers and a bell on it. And I can’t really say he dislike anything, he is such a wonderful cat ever since he was very small!!” What a wounderful gift!

Many kids attend typical day camps which include arts and crafts, swimming, sports, and such, but some teens opted for a summer of service. HandsOn Broward’s Summer Service Camp gave teens the opportunity to see firsthand the issues in their communities, and the tools and resources they need to respond and become part of the solution. During Summer Service Camp, campers participated in hands-on service projects at partnering nonprofit organizations making a positive mark on their community including Miramar’s very own community garden. The partnership between the two organizations was fruitful to say the least. #handsonbroward#communityservice#miramarcommunitygarden#environment #volunteers#ourcitymedia #stayconnected
